•    Reading at home EVERY night is important. Please have your child read at least 20 minutes each night. Here are some tips to help YOU help your child with their reading.

When they come to a TRICKY WORD try a STRATEGY:
      • Look at the pictures for clues
      • Look for chunks in the word that are familiar
      • Ask "What word makes sense?" "Does that sound right?" "Does that look right?"
      • Look at the beginning letter and move through the word saying all the sounds, then say the sounds quickly
      • -Example: c-a-t...cat

~Rereading books develops confidence and fluency~

WHILE reading and AFTER reading, check their understanding:

    • Ask questions about the characters, setting, problem and solution
    • Ask if the story reminds them of anything to make a text-to-self, text-to-text connection
    • Ask how the character might be feeling and why do they think that
    • Retell the story from the beginning, middle and end

-After they read a book have them write a few sentences about what they read. Have them s-t-r-e-t-ch out words when writing. We are looking for them to hear all the sounds in the word, not so much spelling the word correctly at this level.
