     What is Food and Nutrition?
     
    The course "FOOD  & NUTRITION" is designed to give students an understanding and exploration of sound nutritional concepts through many hands-on experiences related to food and nutrition. You will enhance your knowledge relating to nutritional requirements for people of various ages and needs, learn about the dietary guidelines which promote long-term wellness, and plan, purchase, prepare, serve, and evaluate a wide variety of foods.
     
    The social/cultural aspects, nutrition and health, safety and sanitation, career options and consumer skills, meal management and food preparation skills will be the focus of the curriculum arranged in three major units of study:
     
    1. THE IMPORTANCE OF FOOD unit will examine how food affects life, nutritional needs, making healthy food choices, nutrition through the life cycle and safeguarding the health of the family.
    2. THE MANAGEMENT OF FOOD unit will examine kitchen utensils, meal planning, the smart consumer and recipe selection, measuring ingredients and using a time-work schedule for lab planning.
    3. THE PREPARATION OF FOOD unit will examine several specific food areas as we study and prepare many categories possibly including meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, breads, soups, and cakes, cookies, pies and candies.
